1. Principal’s Message

Dear HIS Community

We are nearing the end of the school year and we have many events happening, so keep an eye on the Crane and the HIS Calander. Our next important event is the Grade 12 Graduation tomorrow and you can find details below. Congratulations to our Seniors who are just about to start a new adventure.

The period of nominations for the four Guardian positions for the Board of Trustees has closed. We received two nominations for the four available places so I will confirm with the nominated candidates and make an announcement early next week. An election for two more Guardians to the Board of Trustees will be held when we return from summer break. I would encourage you all to consider this important role.

On the last day of school, we will have a whole school assembly from 2:00 pm – 3: 00 pm and parents are invited to attend. We will open the ground for parking at 1:45 pm.

Enjoy your weekend.

Kind regards

Damian Rentoule (Principal)

3. Incoming Teacher Introductions

Marisa Villarreal (KG/Gr1)

From the USA. Previously taught in USA, China, and Lithuania

I am excited to be joining the HIS community and look forward to learning with the KG/1 students next school year! In addition to working as a classroom teacher both in the United States and internationally, I have spent significant time assessing students for Special Education. I am a strong believer in lifelong learning and in ensuring an inclusive and quality education for all students. In my free time, I enjoy travelling, photography, and immersing myself in different cultures.

Guy Dormer (Gr4/5)

From New Zealand. Previously taught in New Zealand and Vietnam.

I am from Auckland, New Zealand and have been teaching Grade 4-5 classes internationally for 9 years. As a classroom teacher I am passionate about student achievement, and about ensuring that the classroom culture is one which is safe, supportive and challenging. Prior to coming to HIS I have worked in Auckland and in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. My interests outside school include hiking, reading, learning languages, travelling and cricket.

Robert Washington (MYP Sciences/DP Biology)

From the United States. Previously taught in US, Japan, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
I am very excited to become part of the HIS family. I hail from Memphis, Tn, and  I have been teaching science in various countries for the better part of a decade. I have lived in Japan before and worked as an English teacher. Now, I return to this fantastic country to begin a new adventure.  During my time away from academia, I enjoy reading, travelling, weight lifting (when I have the opportunity) and spending quality time with my family.

Edwina Sylvestre (EC3/4 Teaching  Assistant from January 2019)

From the United States. Previously taught in the US, Japan, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

I’m originally from Port-au-Prince and began my teaching career in Hiroshima, Japan in 2002 as an English teacher.  I have since taught French, 3rd Grade, and worked as a Learning Support teacher. This year, I will be working as a TA in the Early Childhood department and I’m excited to embark on this new adventure. In my spare time, I enjoy travelling, sewing, and spending quality time with my 2-year-old son.

Justin Lancon (Inquiry Support Instructor – library)

I start in the library at HIS in the summer of 2018 after spending a few years teaching here in Japan and in America. I’ve been lucky enough to experience teaching students of all ages, from babies to the elderly, though most of my experience is in junior high school. Academically, I find a lot of joy in research, and I love helping students grow their knowledge and understanding. My hobbies include reading, archery, photography, and performance driving. On the weekend, you might find me out at the range, at the circuit, or in my home away from home, Ehime.

Ron Crews (EC3/4 Teaching Assistant until December 2018)

From the United States. Previously taught in Japan.

I am from California and hold a BA and MA in English.  I have taught English in Japanese Yochien and served as lead preschool/kindergarten teacher at an international school in Aomori Prefecture. I was a university lecturer for 3 years before taking time off to take care of my 2 daughters. I love animals and enjoy aquarium keeping. I enjoy technology and building computers, trying to play the guitar, the science of baking, and going to the gym (to make up for all the baking)

Dear parents,

FRIDAY 8th JUNE: Grade 5 to Grade 6 Transition Day

On Friday 8th June, we have scheduled a transition day for the Grade 5 students entering Grade 6 in August. The goals of this transition are to:

  • familiarize incoming Grade 6 students with some of the secondary teachers
  • allow incoming Grade 6 students to change classes and move around the building, especially in areas they are not familiar with (Annex classrooms, art room, science lab)
  • give children a preview of what they will be learning in Grade 6 – observing a lesson or activity that will spark their interest will take place in each subject.

Students will be shadowing the G6 class on this day to ensure that they can experience a variety of classes.  Where secondary teachers may not be scheduled to meet with the G5 students, we hope to arrange a pop-in session before the end of the semester for students to become acquainted with new teachers.

The Grade 4 students will remain in the G45 classroom with Mr B and Ms Valdez.

If you are interested, you are highly encouraged to stand for election.
The next Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Thursday June 7, at the UNITAR office, across from the Atomic Bomb Dome from 7 PM.  This meeting is open to any and all interested members of the HIS community, provided that you contact Board of Trustees Chairperson in advance – the email is bot_chair@hiroshima-is.ac.jp
