Taking A Trip

2010-03-25 | by Wayne Bartelink [mail] | Categories: news

For the past 3 weeks the p1-1 class have been busy learning about and taking trips. We have been to Fuji Grand for lunch and to the Disaster Prevention Center to learn about emergency procedures. Tuesday next week we will be visiting the Children’s Museum. Needless to say the students have been really enjoying this unit. We are still deciding on the place for our last field trip…..If you have any good ideas please let us know.

Central idea: People take trips for different reasons

An inquiry into: The reasons we take trips
Planning a trip
What do we need to do before we take a trip
Documenting our trips

If you would like to come in and share some of your trip experiences with the kids we would love to have you. Please just let me know and we’ll arrange a time.

Ways of learning

2010-02-08 | by Adrienne Jensen [mail] | Categories: news

In P-1 we try to match the type of learning we do, with the many forms of learning styles that students may show.

In our last unit of How we Express Ourselves, we looked at telling stories through acting out, music and orally. Our fun night of Festive Eve demonstrated a lot of our understandings as we expressed characters without words!

We also worked throughout the unit to get the children involved in selecting musical instruments to demonstrate a character in a story, and acting out a character in a story.

Our new unit of work is: Clean Water is Vital! And we have been investigating Water and how it is used in both local and global environments.

During this time we have built up our knowledge of some science topics such as Properties of Water, The Water Cycle, and some more Social studies areas such as The Use of Water, Water Pollution, and Ways to Conserve water.

Using posters and Powerpoint demonstrations, last week the children shared this gained knowledge with the rest of the PYP, through Assembly. It was very impressive as they used keywords to jog their memories of what we had discussed, and also read the text on the slideshow to their peers.

Each child worked in a group of 3 or 4 to present their understandings so far, before they move to the next stage of their learning, which is Making Connections to their lives.

Here are some links that they can also share with you!

There will be more to come for sharing about this topic, over the next 2 weeks! Enjoy taking action with them!

Learning takes all forms and shapes!

At the end of each Unit of Inquiry, the students have a final task they have to complete, that shows their understanding and learning of the central or main idea in undertaking the topic.

Often this task gives choices of delivery style as you can see in the photos previously uploaded. Sometimes though, we limit the choices to so that all children have to work to one criteria - it depends on the topic of the unit and what we are trying to achieve.
