I am enthusiastically joining HIS as Director of Studies (responsible for the secondary academic programs, including the IGCSE and IB Diploma) after more than a decade of work in internationally-minded education on three continents. I am a commissioned workshop developer for the International Baccalaureate Organization and also have been working with them on curriculum and program reviews. My passions include bird watching and aviculture, the outdoors, gardening, learning languages and experiencing new cultures and ways of living.

I arrived at HIS in 2008 and have taught classes across P1 through to Grade 3 during this time. I am the PYP Coordinator and have enjoyed leading the annual Reading Week and Festive Eve productions. My interests include swimming, art, music, driving and travelling.

I have been teaching at HIS since 2003. I organize the HIS entry in the Hiroshima Peace Marathon. I run a guitar club and coach Primary futsal / soccer. My interests include the outdoors, ice hockey, soccer and playing music.

I joined HIS in 2011. I have been an IB examiner (History) and moderator (MYP Humanities) as well as an IELTS and IGCSE ESL examiner. My interests, aside from reading history, include photography, chess, travel, and good food.

Trained as an early childhood teacher, I have taught students from age 4 through to 18, covering primary homerooms, middle and high school technology and social studies, IGCSE and IB Diploma. With two daughters at HIS, I'm engaged in the school community as a parent as well as a school leader. When away from the job, I like to relax with the family, get outdoors, improve my golf and follow Manchester United.

Rachel Kirby

I have been teaching my two favourite subjects, English and Art, at HIS since 2011. I’m also the CAS Coordinator and home room advisor for Grade 6. In my spare time I enjoy exploring new trails on my mountain bike, and carving through fresh powder on my snowboard. Shopping and eating also rate highly.

I began my teaching career in the United States. I have taught at universities and have been teaching Japanese at HIS since I came back to Japan. I have a degree in teaching foreign languages. I enjoy interacting with my students very much. My interest includes playing tennis, reading both in English and Japanese, and chatting over cafe latte.

I joined HIS in 2011. I really enjoy working with young children, and love to watch them grow as they learn more and start to develop their own individual personalities. I have lived in Japan for over 2 years and I love Japanese culture! In my spare time I enjoy watching films, reading novels, studying Japanese, and travelling around Japan. I also have a strong interest in interior design, architecture, art and photography.

I have been here at HIS since 2002, first as a teacher's aid, then as an ESL assistant teacher and now as an ESL teacher. Outside school, I enjoy a quiet time drawing and reading.

After a career designing and programming software for computers I decided to turn my hand to the most complex processor on the planet, your child. I started my teaching career in outdoor education before training as an elementary teacher in NZ and joined HIS in 2011.

I have been teaching at HIS since 1994. I coordinate music events such as Festive Eve and the annual Spring Concert. I support organizing concerts and workshops by guest musicians. Directing the primary chorus and secondary orchestras with everyone-on-board is always an inspiring challenge. Making music is my life-long joy. I also like gardening at home so I can grow vegetables, and fishing by the sea so I can hope to catch the big ones.

I have taught most grades in Primary, have been a PYP Coordinator, and had a short stint teaching older grades. I have been an IB PYP workshop leader and school visitor for nine years and have worked in Asia-Pacific; Africa, Europe, Middle East; and the Americas. Recently I have been focusing on developing students' thinking skills and encouraging children to think creatively and independently. When not working I enjoy knitting, reading, running and camping in comfort.

I love Japanese culture and history and enjoy travelling to Nara and Kyoto to explore these interests.
