Dear HIS Community
It was wonderful to see our Diploma Program (DP) Music students performing in the recitals this afternoon. It is amazing to see the level of performance that comes as a result of a very long learning journey full of creativity and hard work. Congratulations to our students as well as Takako sensei who is with them for the journey.
This week’s talk is a TED event from Japan and the subject is ‘action’, a very important part of our IB programs. This one is in Japanese and it does sound very much like someone putting forward an argument for an IB style education, action being such an important part of becoming an independent learner.
I hope you all have a chance to enjoy this lovely spring weather and spend some time under the sakura trees this weekend.

Message from the HIS Board of Directors, Director General
Note from the Director General
I hope this note finds you all well. I enjoyed the HIS “talent show” recently, and was both surprised and impressed by the spirit, energy and yes, TALENT, that was shown by students from all levels—a lot of fun, and congratulations to all participants—I know I speak for everyone in saying you all did a wonderful job.
The Board of Directors (BOD) had their meeting a few days later, and important things like student enrollments are stable, programs are running well, and so forth. While the overall enrollment numbers remain virtually unchanged from a year ago, we are seeing less “corporate” students, which does have an impact on our budget, where we are more and more having to operate the school solely based on monies gained through regular tuition, rather than from any supplemental sources.
At the same time, we are looking at what to do with the separate “annex” building, which has outlived its basic “life expectancy” and needs to be replaced with a new structure—the Board is currently looking at how to do that—our hope is to transfer the current payments for the outdated structure to the funding of the new one so that the actual annual budget will not be significantly impacted upon.
Other issues that came up was the possibility of a property downtown that could be used as a dorm facility for older children that might be attracted to our school from at-a-distance locations—again, simply an item under consideration at this stage.
Finally, this is the time of year that we put together the school budget for the coming year, based on projected student enrollments, expenditures and so forth—this is a several step process, and will be discussed both at the next BOD meeting in April, and at the Board of Trustees meeting which will follow it in close succession (as yet to be scheduled).
Enjoy the coming spring!
