Principal's Message Dear HIS Families I hope you have all enjoyed your week. I received a question this week at the PTA meeting regarding the reason why HIS is considering a boarding program. I thought I would say a few words about that today. Firstly, a boarding program has been discussed by the Board of Directors for a number of years. The main benefit of a boarding program would be to boost the number of students in our upper Secondary classes to stabilize enrolments at HIS over time. Historically, enrolment numbers have gone up and down, year-to-year. When student numbers go down, the costs of running the school do not. For this reason, if…

Principal's Message Dear HIS Families Thank you to all of the parents who came in this morning to help with feedback for the PYP self-study. We also had a quick look at the set of Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills that we can target to support learning at home. For example, if the all-important reading is not happening at home it could be a case that the development of organizational skills (time-management/goal setting) may be needing some support. Many of the definitions are not perfect translations, such as a term like 'critical thinking/批判的思考' with slightly different connotations in English and Japanese, however below are the official translations which are a…

Principal's Message Dear HIS Families We welcome back our Grade 4/5 students and their teacher-chaperones from Hamada Camp. They all had a great time and made it back safe and sound. These camps are a major adventure for our students and a very important part of their program, developing their social skills and becoming more caring, adventurous learners in the process. I would like to share a video, produced by the IB, which provides an overview of the programs and gives you a sense of the array of schools offering the IB around the world. You can see this video underneath. I would also like to thank the parents who have been very proactive…

Principal's Message Dear HIS Families We were happy to see the safe return of our travellers from the Netherlands. They had a very successful trip and all came back safely, albeit a bit sleepy from the jetlag. One request I had this week was for all parents to please contact your child's classroom teacher directly if you have any questions regarding the classroom. This will help keep communication constructive and positive.  We really need to make sure we communicate directly with the person who is most closely connected to an issue, rather than talk about it with others. This is what we teach…

Principal's Message Dear HIS Families Thank you all for attending last night's Parent Information Night. It was great to see you here and we look forward to a very successful year, working together to support the learning of your children. We will have a relatively quiet school next week with secondary students out at either the Netherlands trip or at the Secondary Camp. If your child is going on one of these, please make sure they read their packing lists very carefully. Your children are becoming more independent learners, but they may need some help gathering necessary items.…

Supporting learning at home – routines

Principal's Blog
As we start another school year we consider the relationship between the child, school and home. Oftentimes, the conversation focuses on homework - the nature of the tasks that students are required to do outside of the school day. However, another important element is routine. In the photo above, students take part in a regularly scheduled reading time while at school. Routines help us manage our time. What regular times do you set aside for specific tasks at home? You can negotiate these as a family. A structure to support learning at home will help your child and over time, help them see the value in time-management. It is a strategy that they will learn - setting aside specific regular times to work on important matters. You are training them to manage…

Principal's Message Dear HIS Families One of our hopes, illustrated in the school Mission, is for our students to use the knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes that they develop within their units of inquiry at HIS to take action; to contribute and make a positive impact in their community. I would like to thank Youki Kotani, a HIS 2017 graduate, for a contribution that he has made to our community here at HIS. Youki designed a variety of variations of a HIS logo featuring a paper crane, which we are now able to make use of. Thank you very much for this wonderful contribution.…

Dear HIS Families Welcome back to a new school year. I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer, or winter if you ventured to the Southern Hemisphere. We welcome a number of new families to HIS this year. On Tuesday 22 August, the PTA are hosting a welcome event  at HIS (12:00pm) after our New Family Orientation which starts at 10:30am. On our first day of school (Wednesday 23 August), parents are welcome to the morning assembly on (9:00am-9:40am) in the Gym. It is just a short welcome and afterwards parents can mingle in the foyer with coffee and snacks when students move back to class. Best of luck with those back-to-school preparations. I look forward to seeing you all back at school. Regards Damian Rentoule (Principal) Dates to note…
