The Crane 7 October 2016

Dear HIS Families

Welcome to the October break. This week, I wanted to introduce the Learner Profile attribute, ‘caring’ and also reinforce the idea that the Learner Profile is not just about students. In an IB school, adults and children are all considered to be learners and this has important implications for adult behaviour in the school community. We are the role models that students look to to see how the world should work. For example, we want our children to grow up with empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. We also want them to act to make a positive difference in the lives of others, as we see in the description below.

Caring

思いやりのある人

They show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment. 私たちは、思いやりと共感、そして尊重の精神を示します。人 の役に立ち、他の人々の生活や私たちを取り巻く世界を良くす るために行動します。
As adults in the school community, if we don’t want our children to grow up spreading gossip and rumours, or creating groups to exclude others, for example, then we will model the respect outlined in this Learner Profile attribute. Furthermore, when we recall the ‘risk-taker’ attribute, we will show enough courage to speak-up if we witness such conversations, not taking on the role of the passive by-stander through which so much harm is done in the world. In this way, in our everyday lives as adults in an IB school community, we model the world that we want for our children for this is how worlds are created. It’s a great responsibility that we carry. Let us all continue to make our HIS community an empathetic, compassionate and respectful place for everyone.
Kind regards
Damian Rentoule

Visit by German students during October Break

Twelve students from Oldenburg High School in Germany are visiting Hiroshima on Tuesday, 11 October, 2016. If you would like to help show the students around the Peace Park, please meet at 11:00am in front of the A-Bomb Dome. They would like HIS students to go inside the Peace Museum together.  Afterwards, the students will be free to visit other areas.

They have made a dinner reservation at 6:30pm at a Teppan restaurant (near Reino Inn) and will cover the costs of HIS students’ dinner if you would like to attend dinner as well. Ms Kuniko Numasaki is the teacher who will be with the group.
Even though I am sure that you will recognise the group, here are some photos so you know who to look out for: Japanfahrt2016 参加生徒の写真 It’s a great chance for our secondary students to meet students from another country.

LeLy Hayslip’s lecture

Just a reminder that there will be a lecture on Sunday 9 October at Hiroshima University by LiLy Hayslip, which would be of interest to our secondary students and families as it deals with peace and conflict, important concepts in our HIS curriculum.
