The Crane 4 November 2016

Dear HIS Families

As the bonfire burns at HIS, we hope you are all enjoying the end of another great week. This week I wanted to introduce the Learner Profile attribute,’reflective’. We are celebrating a British tradition this evening with the burning of the effigy of Guy Fawkes. Burning an effigy is normally associated with protest and this burning has become a tradition in the UK, a form of repetition through time, a reminder of that day of treason, plots and gunpowder in 1605 when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the English Parliament. Giving thoughtful consideration to our learning and experiences is one function of tradition, as we see with Guy Fawkes, but it is also important in our day-to-day lives, as individuals, and is an essential element in an IB education.

Reflective 振り返りができる人
They give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and experience. They are able to assess and understand their strengths and limitations in order to support their learning and personal development. 私たちは、世界について、そして自分の考えや経験について、 深く考察します。自分自身の学びと成長を促すため、自分の長 所と短所を理解するよう努めます。

There are many ways to reflect on our learning and experiences. One of the most important ways that we have to reflect on learning at school is through feedback we receive from teachers and peers. This helps us to understand our strengths and weaknesses and a reflective learner is constantly seeking and offering constructive feedback. It is an important attitude to cultivate at school, an essential element for success in the 21st Century. Enjoy the bonfire.

Kind regards

Damian Rentoule (Principal)

Halloween Parade and Secondary Halloween Dance

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Halloween activities.  Over 150 students and parents took part in these events.  We learned from the events and hope to make them even better next year.  Thanks especially to the 9th graders who helped organize the Halloween Dance, and to the Peace Café which turned out to be a fantastic venue.

I have a CAS idea!

As you may be aware, the CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) is an important and mandatory component of the IB Diploma.  CAS activities range from volunteer work in the community, to mentoring younger students, to learning a new skill!

Given that many parents are actively involved in social and cultural activities in Hiroshima, Ms. Hyde, the CAS Coordinator, would like your help in identifying new CAS opportunities for the 11th and 12th graders.  So if you have a good idea, please take a moment to fill out the CAS survey:

We will hold a PTA meeting at the Peace Café, Kami-Hachobori, from 9 to 11 am on Wednesday 30 November.  We will talk about Christmas decorations for the school as well as ideas for next year’s International Festival, so please come if you have time!
