Principal’s Message

Dear HIS Families

We are looking forward to seeing you all next week on Thursday at the Parent Information Evening. I also wanted to let you know of two important events for HIS this year that involve visiting teams. On November 7-9,  we have an accreditation visit which combines the Council of International Schools (CIS) and New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Three people from these organizations will be visiting HIS. Accreditation is related to quality control for the whole school. International schools use external organizations such as these as international schools are not generally controlled by governmental educational authorities. These organizations are different from the International Baccalaureate (IB) which authorizes schools to deliver the IB curriculum program but does not provide accreditation. That is why we have the different visits by CIS, NEASC & IB teams. On December 3-5, a team is coming for an authorization visit for our MYP program, checking the quality of our curriculum. These visits certainly keep us busy but are an important part of the ongoing quality control process of an international curriculum. If you look on the HIS webpage, you can see the logos of these organizations. I wonder if you had ever noticed?

(広島インターナショナルスクールは、様々な国際認可団体から認可を受けています。—インターナショナルスクール協議会(CIS). ニューイングランド学校協議会(NEASC).国際バカロレア機構(IB). これは、教育の質の高さを保証するものです。)

Enjoy your weekend.

Kind regards

Damian Rentoule (Principal)

Parent Information Evening

Dear Parents,

The year has started on a wonderful note and children and teachers are settling in well.

As you can see on the HIS calendar, our first big event of the year will occur next Thursday, 6th September. This is an opportunity for you to hear what exciting things will be happening in your child’s classes, meet other parents in your grade level, and further your relationship with the teachers who will be part of your child’s learning journey this year. We hope to see you all here. Please find below the details and explanations.

Schedule

Optional Information Session (We will run these sessions again later in the year)

5:30 ~ 5:50         Primary Japanese (1st Floor, Main Building, Japanese Room)

5:30 ~ 5:50         Secondary Japanese (2nd Floor, Main Building, Secondary Room 1)

5:30 ~ 5:50         English as an Additional Langauge (EAL) – Supporting English Language Learning (2nd Floor, Main Building, Secondary Room 2)

These information sessions are optional and for those who would like to understand better the program here at HIS. The three sessions will happen simultaneously in the three different classrooms.

6:00 ~ 6:45         Homeroom Class Presentations

Homeroom and class teachers will share important information and an overview of the year. These sessions will be able to address most of your questions or concerns. Please be reminded this is not the time to discuss individual students and meetings can be arranged for that purpose at a later date.

7:00  ~ 7:30       Gathering in the gym for the Principal’s Message.

Parking

Parking will be available on the field.

Lost Property

There are a few universal laws that govern school life all around the world. One of these is that items without names will almost always disappear into the void. Another is that items with names will nearly always come back, like a boomerang, in fact, no matter how many times you try and throw them away. It is quite remarkable. Related to this is the very interesting phenomenon of children not recognizing their own property, a type of clothing-based amnesia, the moment it lands in the lost property box, almost like it becomes invisible to them, even if they have worn it for years. No credible scientific explanation for this has ever been found.

Please help us out and name the items your child brings to school. Thanks.

PTA News

Please find PTA news attached. We will email this out on Monday as well. Thank you to the PTA for all the great work. PTA News

Library Volunteers

On Thursday four PTA parents came and helped out with sorting, cleaning, and learning about the library circulation (book lending system). If you would like to help make the library even better, please contact Matt Jungblut (mjungblut@hiroshima-is.ac.jp) and he will help explain how you can volunteer.
Thank you so much to the parents who joined this week. Your efforts are truly appreciated.
