Principal’s Message

Dear HIS Community

Welcome back to the New Year and I hope you all enjoyed the break. We started the New Year with some great news. We received notification of our successful authorization for the IB Middle Years Program.

We are happy to announce that our MYP verification visit last December was fully successful and that we have received our official MYP authorization from the IB. HIS is now officially the only three program International Baccalaureate School in the region. Thanks to everyone in the community for their continued support for our mission and vision!

I have included a link to a great TED Talk by novelist Chimamanda Adichie below dealing with an issue that goes to the heart of an IB education – broadening our perspectives, as learners. This talk has been translated into Japanese and you can access the different languages (subtitles) by clicking the button in the bottom right corner. I was hoping to include a series of TED Talks in the Crane over the coming months related to issues of education, identity and language – topics we are all interested in within our context of international education.

I think Chimamanda Adichie describes, very well, why we would be trying to include a range of perspectives into our units of inquiry throughout the PYP, MYP and DP classes, here at HIS rather than relying on a single textbook series, for example. I hope you enjoy the talk and get a chance to relax on the weekend.

Kind regards

Damian Rentoule (Principal)

Atsuko’s Tree – Donations to children’s hospital

Dear HIS community,
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season with families and friends. On Christmas morning, I brought the presents to the Pediatrics Department of Hiroshima Nisseki Hospital. This year I was unable to distribute presents directly to the children because of the influenza epidemic, but the nurses and hospital staff were able to distribute to all the children who were hospitalized. We also donated some to the playroom. Thank you for donating lots of heartfelt presents and helping make the day special for children who were not able to spend Christmas with their family at their home.
Regards
The Crane Jr and Ryoko Jordan
