PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear HIS Families

I hope you have enjoyed the week. We had some great news earlier in the week which was the decision by the Board of Directors after receiving input from the Board of Trustees to proceed with construction of the new building. The new space will be a great improvement to our facilities with a series of larger classroom spaces.  We now have the opportunity to fine-tune the final design and we will be asking members of the school community to help us with the final details.

We will partly fund the project from existing reserves and also a bank loan.  This will ensure that operational costs associated with the project will be less than the current leasing costs on the Annex. This means that the project would not cause a tuition increase, so I wanted to clarify that point. We hope to begin construction as soon as possible at the end of this school year (June 2020) and construction would continue through most of the next school year until approximately May 2021. During this period we will be conducting all classes in the main building so space will be quite tight and we are currently looking at our schedules to make this as smooth as possible. We are really excited and thank you to our Board of Directors who have been working on this project for over eighteen months, plus some years of discussions in preparation.

Once we get the construction of the new building underway, we need to give some consideration to our playground which needs some tender loving care so I thought this TED Talk may be of interest. Enjoy the weekend.

Kind regards

Damian Rentoule

HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS

Thank you very much to the HIS PTA for all the work on the Halloween decorations. They are looking great and the students were fascinated by the new additions. We do not currently have a PTA committee overseeing activities so we have individual parents volunteering to look after specific activities and in this case, I would like to thank Kumi for stepping forward to lead this PTA activity. We really appreciate your efforts and also all of the parents who have been involved. It looked like lots of fun.

CONGRATULATIONS TO HIKARU

Well, done Hikaru (Gr9) who has been continuing to have great success in the world of chess and is currently ranked No. 1 in his age division in Japan. We are all very proud of your achievements.

PYP WORKSHOP

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the PYP. We will post the slides and supporting information for anyone who can not make it.
Date: Thursday, Oct. 17th
Time: 9:00 am ~ 10:00 am.
Workshop content:
  • What is the PYP?
  • How does PYP support 21st-century learning?
  • How is the curriculum delivered? (Including a closer look at mathematics in the PYP)

BASEBALL GLOVE DONATIONS

We would like to gather some baseball gloves for PE and camp-based activities. As these are items that can tend to gather at home when children grow up if you have a spare baseball glove which you do not use any more we would appreciate the donation. Thank you for your support.
