Principal’s Message

Dear HIS Community

Thank you to all of the parents who joined us for the Parent Information Night. We hope that you enjoyed the evening. The partnership between the parents, child and school is so important and meeting face-to-face early in the year really helps us to develop this relationship. Thank you for participating in our activity in the gym. It was just a short insight into the Social, Emotional and Ethical learning program used to support our Approaches to Learning skills. The short presentation SEE Learning that we used last night can be viewed here. Although there are links to many of the Approaches to Learning skill areas, self-management skills are very closely related – managing not only our organizational skills, which is often the focus of schools but also managing our emotions and our relationships. The first area explored in each level of the SEE Program (Early Primary, Late Primary, Middle School & High School) is described as creating a compassionate classroom. These are all important ways to become a more caring learner as described in our IB learner profile.

At each level, 7 areas are explored:

  1. Creating a Compassionate Classroom
  2. Building Resilience
  3. Strengthening Attention and Self-Awareness
  4. Navigating Emotions
  5. Learning About and From One Another
  6. Compassion for Self and Others
  7. We’re All in This Together

I think that this is the type of classroom where I would like to be learning.

This leads on to great TED Talk where Sugata Mitra looks at a very different type of learning environment and presents some great ideas about the difference between making learning happen and letting it happen.

Enjoy your weekend.

Regards

Damian Rentoule

Coffee Morning- MYP Information Session

Date: September 20th, 2019
Time: 9:00-10:00
Place: Pink Room at HIS
Dear Parents

I would like to invite you to a Middle Years Program (MYP) coffee morning on Friday 20 September between 9:00 and 10:00 am in the Pink Room. (Students in grades 6-10 at HIS follow the MYP curriculum). The session will focus on the program’s structure and philosophy and will also be an opportunity for parents to ask questions about teaching and learning in the MYP.

I would especially like to ask the parents of Grade 6 and all the parents of our newly joined students in Grades 6-10 to attend this presentation as it will give the overview of MYP in HIS.  Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Kind regards
Sasha Omukova

Board of Trustees (BOT) Guardian Positions

There are 5-7 places for Guardians on the Board of Trustees. We hold an election when a position opens due to a member’s 2-year term expires, or if they leave the school. If a member’s term expires, the member continues in that role until the election is finalized. Currently, we are looking for nominations for 4 Guardian positions on the Board of Trustees. It is a voluntary position and we are very grateful to all of our Board of Trustee members for their generous support of the school. If you are interested in nominating yourself for this 2-year voluntary position, please enter your name in the following nomination form. We will contact you to request a short written introduction.

We have two open Guardian (parent) positions for the BOT. If you would like to nominate yourself for one of these BOT Guardian places, please add your name on this form.

Parent-Teacher Association (PTA)

We are looking for a few volunteers to lead the PTA this year, or at least take the lead on an event, even if you do not want to commit to taking a leading role in the PTA.

  • We have Halloween coming up of course, so if anyone would like to work on a Halloween event of some sort at school, please let me know.
  • November is usually a Bonfire Night so if anyone is interested in leading this one, likewise, please let me know.
  • We have a volunteer to help out with a HIS hoodie order which was run by the PTA last year, so we will start work on that.
