PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear HIS Community

It has been a very interesting couple of weeks in terms of climate change action with quite a few of our students being inspired by Greta Thunberg and the global action that she has prompted. I posted a TED Talk by Greta Thunberg on the Crane last year and it was quite a remarkable talk. It was just over a year ago since she walked out of her school to organize a school-strike to raise awareness of global warming, protesting outside the Swedish Parliament. This address, below, to the UN Climate Change Summit a year later has an added note of urgency. A group of HIS students spoke with me yesterday with some ideas for action that we can take as a school and we would like to support them in any way we can. It would be a great conversation to have at home with your child. What ideas do they have? How could the family support them?

We also received an invitation to join a group from the Hiroshima Peace Village at the Peace Park supporting this movement. The timeline is a bit short as it is today, but I will be going in this afternoon and we may be able to work together with the Peace Culture Village in the future in their efforts to support climate change action. Below is a short video with an invitation from Steve Leeper, a long term peace activist and former Board member of HIS who leads the efforts of the Peace Culture Village in Hiroshima.

Teaching and learning in our IB programs are based on an inquiry cycle that has action and reflection as integral parts of the learning process. Our HIS mission and vision focus on supporting learners to develop a lifelong commitment to a more peaceful and sustainable planet. We encourage students to take their skills, knowledge and understanding and use this to take action which can take a variety of forms. We also seek to foster independence and in this sense, Greta Thurnberg is providing a great model for us all.

Environmental sustainability and the social components necessary for a peaceful culture are intricately connected and it seems that one would not be possible without the other. Enjoy your discussion with your child about their ideas for action at school and at home.

Enjoy the weekend.

Kind regards

Damian Rentoule
