The Crane, 12 May 2024

Welcome from James Steward

Dear HIS Community,

The MYP took centre stage this week at HIS with their exceptional work on our Interdisciplinary Units (IDUs). Students studied such concepts as Artificial Intelligence, Renewable Energy, and Disaster Preparedness. Our students and teachers were superb while integrating complex concepts into the learning and teaching. Congratulations to Sarah Niemann (MYP Coordinator) and the entire MYP Team.

This coming weekend the focus will be on the Spring Concert, College Counselling, The Visual Arts Exhibition in MYP and Parent Student Conferences from ECKG to G4. We are looking forward to hosting you. More information can be found below.

The Peace Riders will leave campus next Monday morning for their adventure into the mountains of Yamagata. Mr Barker and Dr Skaer have been training our riders consistently since the beginning of the school year.

The IB DP Exams are almost complete. The final ones occur early this week. Congratulations to the G12 students, Mr Smith our DP Coordinator and all invigilators that helped support this complex endeavour.

I hope the week to come is a positive one for the entire HIS Community.

Sincerely,

James Steward

HIS Principal

The Barkers in Zambia!

During Golden Week the Barkers were able to make a couple of donations in Zambia on behalf of HIS.

Peace Ride Donation

We were happy to deliver a Buffalo charity bike to Kasisi orphanage. About 240 children live in the orphanage, which is run by nuns from Poland.

The bike was purchased in Zambia with money raised through Peace Ride T-shirt sales. Thanks to everyone who bought one!

Library Book Donation

We also brought about a hundred books no longer needed by the HIS library and donated them to Enviro-Floor school, which is the school on Shanika’s farm. Shanika is Ren’s sister, who also went to HIS when she was little.

In Remembrance of Yusuke Hiraga

Dear HIS Community,

In remembrance of our dear classmate Yusuke Hiraga (class of 2020), who tragically left us one and a half years ago, we are coming together at HIS on the weekend of June 16th 11 am, to pay tribute to his life and friendship.

We plan to hold a ceremony to plant a tree sapling and dedicate a bench in his honour next to the new Annex at HIS. We hope that this sapling will grow into a healthy tree and the bench will be used by future generations of HIS students.

We warmly invite you to join us in paying tribute to Yusuke’s memory. Specific details regarding the time and day will be finalised closer to the date.

We also kindly ask for donations to contribute to the cost, estimated at 70,000 yen, for the bench and plaque.  We request donations to be sent to the following bank account
